High Risk Assessment
We took the girls to the High Risk Assessment Clinic @ the children's hospital where they spent 14+ weeks after they were born. The good news is that they did very well on their assessment. There were several components and they ran both girls @ the same time, but we were still there for over an hour & 1/2. They did weight, height, head circumference: Andrea is now @ 25 percentile for height 50 percentile for weight, Alejandra is @ 50 percentile for height 75 percentile for weight & that is according to their corrected age 12 months. Considering they weighed 1.4 & 1.5 lbs @t birth, it's nice to see they're finally on the charts.
Developmentally they scored very well too! They both averaged around 15 to 16 months on the developmental charts with some skills @ 12 months & some @ 18 months. They used a lot of the stuff they are already familiar w/ like the toys that Marisa (their Bright Start aide) brings to play with on Fridays. The thing that did hold them back was their walking, which is okay by me. They are slowly & cautiously getting better @ it, but I'm still not worried or in any hurry for them to get that skill down pat. I figure it will happen soon enough & then I'll be in the looney bin! Kathy (one of their former NICU nurses) was the one that was doing the developmental assessments. She told us @ the picnic all of the preemies did really well, especially the multiples, she also said our girls did the best out of all that she's tested (but I think she might have said that to everyone). She did ask me during the assessment if I stayed home to take care of them. It did make me feel good that staying home w/ them has really paid off.
The NP did her assessment (it was Kamela the nurse who was present @ Andrea's delivery). She did a physical exam and they passed all the health aspects too. Finally the social worker came in to ask us if we needed anything, any referrals to agencies, she asked what agencies we were connected to (we told her & she was shocked that they had so many services already). She asked us about our adjustment phase, how that had gone & if we had a good family support system. All the services we get & our family support have really helped out. Everything seemed to fall right into place after we arrived home w/ the girls, so they've been recieving services from the very beginning. Of course, my parents see them almost every day, so the enormous amount of adult one-on-one attention has really helped them too!
Even though I know they are doing well, I always get nervous that they are going to find something wrong. Both dh & I felt the old familiar stress just driving into the hospital parking lot, but we both agreed that it was just residual conditioning left over from last year. Every day I'm reminded of just how blessed I am to have my two girlie girls!
