I grew up using very little over-the-counter cold medicine when I had a cold or flu. My mom, who has taught pharmacology (among other things) told me they were not really effective with viral infections. Confronted with my husband's family and their emphasis on drugs to "treat" these things, I decided to take nothing for granted, and research it myself.
Mom was right. Figures. Here's one of the easier-to-understand pages regarding
over-the-counter medicine. The conclusion? Give the child fluids and use a humidifier.
Now, this isn't to say that the few times I've had OTC cold medicine, it hasn't felt good going down. A thick liquid always feels better on the throat. But then, so did hot chocolate. :P
